Background

Cities are where the metaverse meets the majority of humanity.

55%
of the world's population lives in cities today — rising to 80% by 2050.
Today2050

Cities are at the forefront of global challenges. It is estimated that the proportion of the world's population living in cities will keep climbing over the coming decades, straining infrastructure, services, and sustainability targets alike.

At the same time, the investment and positive momentum generated by the promise of the metaverse offer a unique opportunity for cities and communities to accelerate digital transformation and the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Recognizing the potential impact of the metaverse on cities, this Contribution suggests establishing a new Task Group on CitiVerse.

The proposal

A new Task Group on pre-standardization for the CitiVerse, under FG-MV Working Group 1 — General.

DEFINE

Develop a working definition of "CitiVerse" that the standardization community can build on.

FOCUS

Concentrate on the technical aspects of the metaverse in cities, with a clear perspective toward standardization.

ROADMAP

Develop a "Pre-standardisation roadmap for an inclusive and sustainable CitiVerse" — a shared path for cities worldwide.

A draft Technical Report on this roadmap is already underway in the Task Group on Collaboration, led by Cristina Martinez (European Commission). If the new Task Group is created, this work item transfers across — alongside consideration of existing frameworks such as the Tampere Metaverse Vision 2040.
The people

Contacts behind the Contribution.

Future partners

Who the roadmap still needs at the table.

CITY GOVERNMENTS

Municipal digital authorities

Beyond Tampere and Dubai — mayors' offices and smart-city agencies who will operationalize any CitiVerse standard on the ground.

PLATFORM & INFRASTRUCTURE

Metaverse and AI technology providers

Spatial computing, XR hardware, and AI infrastructure partners to complement Nvidia's involvement in the Task Group.

STANDARDS BODIES

Adjacent SDOs and UN agencies

Coordination with UN-Habitat, ISO/IEC, and W3C to keep CitiVerse pre-standardization interoperable, not siloed.
